Fantasy Week In Review, June 21 – 27

June 29th, 2010

Here are the fantasy studs, the players who have me concerned, and the potential pickups for the fantasy week that was of June 21st – 27th.

Fantasy Studs

Carlos Quentin – .389/4/11/.522. Quentin hasn’t been the same since breaking his hand towards the end of the 2008 season. Perhaps last week was the start of a huge second half.

Wright is having a supurb 1st half

Alex Rodriguez – .381/3/10. Arod’s OPS has dipped four years in a row and his best days are probably behind him. However, he is still one of the better producing fantasy third baseman in baseball.

David Wright – .500/2/8/ with one SB. While Arod might be one of the better producing fantasy third baseman, Wright right now might be the best. Wright currently leads the NL in RBI with 61.

Michael Young – .400/3/7. Old reliable just keeps on hitting. Young is very quietly on pace for a .316/24/110 season.

Rickie Weeks – .435/2/7/.536. The potential has always been there for Weeks. If he can finally stay healthy in 2010, he could easily reach that potential.

Jaime Moyer – 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA and 12 K’s in 15 IP. Even at the age of 90, Moyer can still get the job done. He is not someone you want to start on a consistent basis, but he is good for a spot start here and there.

Mat Latos – 1-0 with a 0.71 ERA and 13 K’s in 12.2 IP. We are seeing Latos mature right before our eyes. Since April, Latos is 7-2 with a 1.96 ERA. He is a must start on a weekly basis.

Edwin Jackson – 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and six K’s in nine IP. As per one of my rules; If you throw a no-hitter, you are a fantasy stud.

Tommy Hunter – 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA and seven K’s in 12 IP. Hunter doesn’t whiff many (5.2 K/9), but he is now 4-0 with a 2.15 ERA.

Heath Bell – Four saves with a 0.00 ERA and seven K’s in 4.1 IP. Bell is currently second in the NL in saves with 21 and has solidified himself has a No.1 closer in fantasy baseball.

Reasons for Concern

Dustin Pedroia – 15-day DL with a broken foot. Pedroia will miss four-to-six weeks.

Victor Martinez – Martinez fractured his thumb on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants. No word yet on whether or not he will hit the DL, but having a fractured thumb can’t be good.

Jason Heyward – It’s being reported that Heyward has a strained ligament in his thumb. Heyward is going to try to play through it for the remainder of the season. It should be noted that Heyward is batting .181 in June.

Potential Pickups
