Los Angeles Dodgers Sign First Round Pick Chris Reed
August 12th, 2011
Since 1995, the Los Angeles Dodgers have drafted 14 pitchers in the first round. Only two of them — Chad Billingsley (2003) and Clayton Kershaw (2006) — have amounted to anything. With their latest first round pitcher, the Dodgers are hoping he turns into more of Kershaw than Scott Elbert.
The Dodgers signed first round pick (16th overall) LHP Chris Reed according to SI.com’s Jon Heyman. Reed will receive a $1.589 million bonus, which is just a smidgen above slot.
Reed was 6-2 with a 2.56 ERA with 17 walks, 52 K’s, and held hitters to a .211 average in 52.2 innings for Stanford in 2011. He pitched mainly out of the bullpen for the Cardinal in 2011 and led the team with nine saves.
Despite pitching out of the bullpen in college, the Dodgers will convert him to a starter.
