Philadelphia Phillies Acquire Ty Wigginton From Colorado Rockies

November 21st, 2011

According to Jon Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Philadelphia Phillies have acquired INF Ty Wigginton from the Colorado Rockies for the infamous Player To Be Named Later or cash. Wigginton hit .242/.315/.416 with 15 HR’s and eight SB’s in 446 PA’s for the Rockies in 2011.

The Phillies made a good trade by acquiring Wigginton

I really like this move by the Phillies.

Sure, the Phillies could have gone out and given some serious money to Michael Cuddyer, but did they really want to take on the $30 million it would have taken to bring him aboard? Did they really want the right-handed version of Raul Ibanez on their hands? This trade says they weren’t.

Wigginton isn’t as good a player as Cuddyer, but Wigginton can play first, third, and left. You won’t find many players who can play those positions, hit 15-20 HR’s a year, and do so for just $2 million (Rockies are paying the other $2 million Wigginton is owed in 2012 according to Buster Olney).

The Phillies are an older team and have a tendency to be injury prone. They need as many versatile players as possible. Where teams get in trouble with injuries is when they have a bench filled with guys who can just play one position. Wigginton gives them this versatility as a reasonable cost.

Good trade for the Phillies.
