Kansas City Royals Sign Jonathan Broxton

November 29th, 2011

There were many teams interested in former Los Angeles Dodger closer Jonathan Broxton, but at the end of the day, it was the Kansas City Royals who scooped him up.

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Broxton and the Royals agreed to a one-year, $4 million contract. The deal will be finalized tomorrow when Broxton takes his physical.

This is a good landing spot for Broxton as the Royals will give him a chance to re-establish his value in a low-pressure environment. Broxton will most likely set up Joakim Soria.

I know there has been some talk of Soria moving to the rotation, but I don’t see that happening and if it does happen, it won’t be because of the Broxton signing.

To be honest, I am not even sure if Broxton has anything left. Since Matt Stairs ripped his heart out in the 2009 NLCS, Broxton has a 4.32 ERA and has given up 79 hits in 75 innings. Any swagger he had on the mound prior to that AB has gone out the window and once a reliever or any pitcher for that matter loses his swagger, they are a Post Toastie.

And now not only does he seem mentally destroyed, he is coming off of elbow surgery. Even Broxton’s agent, BB Abbott said “the days of Jonathan Broxton throwing 99 and 100 (MPH) might be over.” Awesome!!

If Broxton is going to be successful with the Royals, he is going to need to learn how to pitch at 93-95 mph. While it may not seem like much, those extra 5-5 mph make a huge difference. It will be up to Broxton to make those adjustments.

I have my doubts as to whether or not he can.
