Winter Meetings News And Notes

December 5th, 2011

Baseball’s Winter Meetings got started today in Dallas and as expected, there wasn’t much wheeling and dealing going on. I think the common misconception about the Winter Meetings is that everything happens during these four days.

Yes, there will be some deals made, but for the most part, teams use these four days to feel out other teams for trades and agents to see if their client(s) would be interested in join their respective ballclub. Let’s take a look at some of the rumors and happenings that took place today.

The Brewers are moving on from Fielder

Milwaukee Brewers out on Prince Fielder: ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reported that the Brewers have moved on from Fielder. Unless the Brewers are playing possum, I am definitely a little surprised by this. There doesn’t seem to be that big of a market right now for Fielder and I would think the Brewers would hang around until someone else makes a move.

With the Brewers out, it’s looking like the Toronto Blue Jays might be the front-runners for the slugger.

C.J. Wilson has a six-year offer: Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that Wilson has a six-year offer from a team other than the Rangers. If that’s really the case, then that is just nuts. I would be hesitant to give Wilson even a five-year deal, let alone six.

It wouldn’t shock me if that team was the Washington Nationals. They overpay for everyone.

Jerry Hairston signs two-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers: The Dodgers signed Hairston to a two-year, $6 million contract today, plus incentives. Hairston is a nice little player and has a use on a Major League roster, but two years and six million for Hairston? Come on. That’s comical.

Hairston hit .270/.344/.383 in 376 plate appearances for the Nationals and Brewers last season. Expect Hairston to play the super-utility role for the Dodgers in 2012.

Hanley Ramirez isn’t going anywhere: There was a lot of speculation that the Marlins would trade Ramirez now that they have Jose Reyes in the fold. That won’t be the case according to Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest. Beinfest said today that he envisions Ramirez moving over to third for the Marlins in 2012.

I hope Ramirez warms to the idea of moving to third and gets his head out his rear next season. If he’s right, a lineup that features Ramirez, Reyes, Mike Stanton, and Logan Morrison could be deadly.

We’ll keep updating the significant news from the Winter Meetings as the meetings progress. And when I say significant, I am not talking a “mystery” team in on Chad Qualls.
