Kansas City Royals Turn Back The Clock, Bring Back Yuniesky Betancourt

December 20th, 2011

I was watching Anchorman this weekend and I could just picture Kansas City Royals GM, Dayton Moore acting like Champ Kind when Ron Burgandy missed the pancake breakfast when he was courting Yuniesky Betancourt to come back to Kansas City. Moore definitely missed Betancourt’s musk.

After a year apart, the Royals have signed Betancourt to a one-year, $2 million contract according to Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star. Betancourt an make another $500,000 in incentives and is expected to be the Royals utility infielder in 2012. Betancourt hit .252/.271/.381 with 13 HR’s in 584 PA’s for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2011.

As long as it’s clear that Betancourt is the backup to Mike Moustakas, Alcides Escobar, or Johnny Giavotella, I don’t mind this signing. If the Brewers can win a division title with Betancourt playing in 151 games, then the Royals will be just fine with Betancourt getting a couple of hundred at-bats in 2012.
