Chicago White Sox Give Healthy Extension To John Danks

December 22nd, 2011

There’s nothing worse than being a fan of a team that is perceived to have no game plan. You always feel your team is going in 1,000 different directions.

Now, I am sure Chicago White Sox GM Kenny Williams had a game plan going into this offseason. What that game plan actually is, White Sox fans are still trying to figure that out. Case in point; the John Danks extension.

Last night, the White Sox signed Danks to a five-year, $65 million contract extension. Danks would have been a free agent at the end of the 2012 season, which would have been the first year he was arbitration eligible.

I don’t mind the years of this year. Giving a 26-year-old a five-year deal is no great shakes in my opinion. However, an average of $14 – $15 million a year for Danks (Danks would have earned around $7.6 in 2012 according to MLB Trade Rumors, Matt Swartz) over the course of his four free agent years is really unnecessary.

Danks is a decent pitcher, but not a great one. His 4.00 xFIP since 2008 isn’t even in the top-50 amongst starting pitchers in baseball. I always have viewed Danks as a solid No. 3 or 4 starter on a good team. Think about it like this; he would be the Los Angeles Angels 5th starter or the Milwaukee Brewers’ 3rd starter. Would you give $15 million to someone who can barely break the Angels’ starting rotation?

If Danks is worth $15 million, then what the heck are Cole Hamels or Matt Cain going to get as free agents next winter? Those two must gotten a Ron Burgundy-like erection last night when they saw this deal break.

What’s confusing about this deal from a White Sox fan perspective is that if Williams is going to commit $65 million to Danks, then why the heck did he trade Sergio Santos to the Toronto Blue Jays in what appeared to be a cost-cutting/rebuilding move? That trade made no sense to anybody at the time and makes even less sense now.

The White Sox seem to be caught in between, which is the worst spot to be in. Not good Kenny, not good.
