Projecting The Arizona Diamondbacks’ Starting Lineup
December 27th, 2011
As we make our way around the Major Leagues and take a look at the projected starting lineups and starting rotations for each Major League team, our next stop is Arizona. The Diamondbacks have made a couple of moves to their starting lineup this offseason — one pretty obvious move and one not so obvious.
Let’s take a look at how the Diamondbacks’ starting lineup make look come Opening Day.
1. Ryan Roberts, 3B
2. Aaron Hill, 2B
3. Justin Upton, RF
4. Stephen Drew, SS
5. Paul Goldschmidt, 1B
6. Chris Young, CF
7. Miguel Montero, C
8. Jason Kubel, LF
Manager Kirk Gibson can do a lot of things with this lineup. Roberts could hit leadoff, which he did 38 times in 2011 or he could hit eighth. When Drew was healthy in 2011, he mostly hit fourth, but he could hit first or second and Gibson could move Goldschmidt or Young to the clean up spot.
The Diamondbacks finished the 2011 season eighth in oWAR (31.5) and they should have no problem scoring runs again in 2012. Arizona will have Drew healthy at the start of the season and Bill James is really bullish on Goldschmidt. James is predicting a .266/.367/.516 season out of Goldschmidt with 32 HR’s. That is one heck of a season. If Goldschmidt can come anywhere close to that prediction, I think the Diamondbacks will be very, very happy.
The key to this lineup will be Hill. Which Hill are the Diamondbacks going to get? Are they going to get the Hill that had an .878 OPS in 142 PA’s with the Diamondbacks at the end of the 2011 season or are they going to get the Hill that had a .625 OPS with the Toronto Blue Jays from 2010 to the middle of 2011? Bill James is predicting somewhere in between. James has Hill hitting 14 HR’s and having a .719 OPS. If Hill has a good season, he will give the Diamondback lineup even more depth than they already had.
I like this lineup a lot. It has balance and it’s a lineup where it doesn’t matter if there is a lefty or righty on the mound. The Diamondbacks will score plenty of runs in 2012.
