Weekend News And Notes

December 27th, 2011

With spending time with family this weekend because of Christmas Eve and Christmas, there wasn’t much time for posting. You combine that with not much going on in baseball, it made for a very slow weekend.

However, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t some things going on. Let’s do our version of a weekend update.

Jason Marquis Signs With The Minnesota Twins: The Twins signed Marquis to a one-year, $3 million contract on Friday. Is there more of a “Twin” pitcher than Marquis? Marquis doesn’t strike out many batters, throws a ton a ground balls, and “pitches to contact.” Yup, that’s a Twins pitcher to me.

But this is a pretty good signing by the Twins. Marquis had a 3.96 xFIP with the Washington Nationals before being traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks and to have him as your No.5 starter isn’t a bad deal at all.

The Colorado Rockies Looking To Add Cody Ross: The Rockies are in “contract talks” with Ross according to Buster Olney. First it was Michael Cuddyer and now the Rockies are adding Ross? The Rockies should just give Seth Smith their Staples card so he can get as many moving boxes as possible at this point.

Ross hit .240/.325/.405 with 14 HR’s in 461 PA’s with the San Francisco Giants in 2011. He did have a career-high 10.6 BB Percentage last season. He would be used as a fourth outfielder if he signs with the Rockies.

Where is the Market for Ryan Madson?: It’s been so long since Madson was mentioned in a rumor that I almost forgot he was still available. Madson might be the rare free agent who is a victim of his own success.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe wrote that the Red Sox and Angels are “keeping the dialogue open” with free Madson, but nothing appears close. It just seems like Madson doesn’t have much a market and most likely won’t get the deal he is seeking. I wonder if Madson would be best served signing a one-year deal at market value and then hope the market opens up next offseason.
