Ryan Kalish Could Be Out Till June

January 2nd, 2012

When Josh Reddick was traded to the Oakland A’s last week in the Andrew Bailey deal, it was widely assumed that Ryan Kalish would be a candidate to win the starting right field job for the Boston Red Sox. Well, that’s not going to happen any time soon.

Kalish told the Boston Globe late last week that he underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder in November and does not expect to be ready for spring training and could be out until late-June. Kalish also had neck surgery in September.

With Kalish out and Reddick in Oakland, that leaves the newly acquired Ryan Sweeney and holdovers Alex Aviles and Darnell McDonald to compete for the right field job. None of those guys strikes fear into anyone and I would be shocked if any of those three were the Red Sox Opening Day right fielder.

Look for the Red Sox to trade for someone like Marlon Byrd or sign a Ryan Ludwick type to play right.
