The Tampa Bay Rays Sign Luke Scott
January 11th, 2012
Tampa Bay Ray DH’s really struggled in 2011. Their combined 1.1 WAR was one of the lowest in the American League and their combined .321 wOBA was good for 11th.
In hopes of raising the production they get from the DH spot, the Rays signed Luke Scott to a one-year deal with an option for 2013. Exact terms of the deal haven’t been discussed yet.
Scott, who is coming off of back surgery and torn labrum in his right shoulder was limited to just 64 games with the Baltimore Orioles last season. In those 64 games, Scott hit .220/.301/.402 with nine HR’s in 236 PA’s. However, he is just one year removed from a 27 HR season with a .387 wOBA. If the Rays can anything close to that from Scott, they will be in business.
The signing of Scott most likely means that Johnny Damon won’t be back with the Rays. Damon served as the Rays primary DH last season. Damon was decent with the Rays, but it seems like the Rays are looking for a little more pop out of the DH spot, which Scott can provide if healthy.
