New York Yankees Round Out Their Rotation With Hiroki Kuroda
January 13th, 2012
In a span of about 40 minutes, the New York Yankees’ starting rotation went from suspect at best to very solid. First they acquired RHP Michael Pineda from the Seattle Mariners and now they have signed RHP Hiroki Kuroda.
According to Jack Curry of the YES Network, the Yankees have signed Kuroda to a one-year, $10 million contract.
With Kuroda and Pineda in the fold, here is what the Yankee rotation should look like in 2012…
2. Michael Pineda
3. Phil Hughes
4. Hiroki Kuroda
5. Ivan Nova
With these acquisitions, that could leave A.J. Burnett and Freddy Garcia out in the cold. Like I said earlier, the Yankees went from a rotation that didn’t have much to a rotation that now has just as much — if not more — depth than any rotation in baseball.
Since joining the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008, Kuroda has compiled a 3.45 ERA, 6.7 K/9, and a 12.2 WAR in 699 innings. I think what excited Yankee GM Brian Cashman about Kiroda was that he was just not a product of Dodger Stadium. Kuroda’s career xFIP on the road (3.77) was almost equal to what it was at home (3.47).
Kuroda will be 37 in 2012, so getting him on a one-year deal is a pretty good deal for the Yankees.
