Minnesota Twins Take A Chance On Joel Zumaya

January 16th, 2012

Last week for MLB Daily Dish I took a look at the remaining “Buy-low” free agents. One of those buy-low free agents was former Detroit Tiger flame thrower, Joel Zumaya. Despite his litany of elbow injuries, I thought a team would be wise to take a chance on him.

Reports had a number of teams interested in Zumaya, but the team that was able to snag him was the Minnesota Twins. The Twins signed Zumaya to a one-year contract worth $800,000 according to Jason Beck of MLB.com. Zumaya can make up to $1.7 million if he reaches certain incentives.

The Twins were one of the few teams to offer Zumaya a Major League rather than a spring training invite, but regardless, you can’t help but like this signing by the Twins.

The really could use a guy like Zumaya. They need a guy to come in from the bullpen who just throws gas. Now, will Zumaya be able to throw 99 – 100 mph like he used to? Not a chance. But Ken Rosenthal reported about 10 days ago that Zumaya was throwing in the mid-90′s during a workout in Texas.

The Twins will need to treat Zumaya with kid gloves, meaning pitching him maybe twice a week instead of every other day or back-to-back days. But if the Twins can get anything out of Zumaya in 2012, their bullpen will be much better off.
