Washington Nationals Demote John Lannan

April 4th, 2012

Getting demoted must really suck. But getting demoted 48 hours before Opening Day must really suck.

The Washington Nationals demoted LHP John Lannan to Triple-A yesterday. Lannan was slated to be the Nationals’ No. 5 starter and will most likely be replaced by Ross Detwiler.

Lannan was pretty dreadful this spring, posting a 5.14 ERA and giving up 24 hits and six walks in 21 innings. With a $5 million salary for 2012, the Nationals are pretty much telling Lannan that his days are numbers in a Nationals’ uniform.

Lannan will most likely be replaced by Detwiler in the rotation. That’s how little the Nationals think of Lannan. He is being replaced by Ross Detwiler and his 1.5 WAR in four Major League seasons.
