Tampa Bay Rays’ Closer Kyle Farnsworth Out 4-to-6 Weeks
April 6th, 2012
Tampa Bay Rays’ manager Joe Maddon has said that closer Kyle Farnsworth will be out four-to-six weeks because of his elbow strain. Farnsworth went on the DL yesterday.
In his absence, the Rays will use a closer by committee approach until someone steps up according to Maddon. To those who have followed the Rays over the years, the closer by committee approach is nothing new. Outside of Rafael Soriano in 2010, the Rays have never really relied on one guy to get all the saves. In the year the Rays went to the World Series in 2008, they had six different guys record a save and they had two guys (Troy Percival and Dan Wheeler) record over 10 saves each.
Look for Joel Peralta to get the first crack at closing games for the Rays, with Jake McGee and Fernando Rodney sprinkled in from time to time.
