Diamondbacks vs Dodgers Three Game Series Preview September 4, 2017
The Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers face off in a three-game series beginning Monday, September 4. The Dodgers maintain a large lead in the NL West with a 91-41 record entering Friday’s games, while the Diamondbacks are second in the division and lead in the NL Wild Card race at 76-58.
Looking at this match up, the Diamondbacks have won seven straight entering Friday, including a sweep of the Dodgers, while the Dodgers have dropped five in a row.
Robbie Ray will face Hyun-Jin Ryu in opener. Ray is 11-5 with a 2.97 ERA and allowed only a single run in 6 2/3 in his win over the Dodgers in his last outing. Ryu got hammered by the Diamondbacks in his last start, giving up four runs in 6 innings and is 5-7 with a 3.71 ERA for the season.
Saturday’s game features Zack Greinke for Arizona and Kent Maeda for the Dodgers. Greinke was very good in his win over the Dodgers in his last start and has an impressive 16-6 record with a 3.08 ERA for the season. Maeda lit up against Arizona in his last start, allowing 7 in only three innings, elevating his ERA to 4.19 on the season.
On paper, the Diamondbacks hold the edge in terms of pitching Monday and Tuesday. That changes on Wednesday with Clayton Kershaw on the hill for the Dodgers. Although missing time due to injury, Kershaw is 15-2 with a 2.04 ERA. He will face Taijuan Walker, who is 7-7 with a 3.55 ERA (note that both starters are pitching Friday night, the statistics are entering Friday’s games).
The Dodgers generally hold the edge offensively, but haven’t been swinging the bats particularly well lately. Corey Seager is hitting .286 over the past week but is listed day-to-day with an injury.
Cody Bellinger has 34 home runs but is just 1-for-8 in two games since returning from the DL. Chris Taylor has struggled as well lately, hitting just .174 over the past week. Yasiel Puig has been the hottest and likely the best fantasy option for the Dodgers right now. He has belted two home runs in the past week with a solid .278 batting average.
For the Diamondbacks, they have been winning mostly due to strong pitching. Paul Goldschmidt has been excellent, as usual, offensively, but there hasn’t been much consistent production elsewhere over the past week. Goldschmidt is hitting .319 for the season and 9-for-21 with four homers of the past week entering Friday’s game.
While David Peralta, Jake Lamb, Brandon Drury and Chris Orwings have all been decent fantasy options, none are swinging the bat well lately and Orwings is on the 60-day DL. One player fantasy owners may which to play is Chris Ianetta, who is 5-for-13 over the last week. Keep in mind that he hasn’t been a regular starter, so pick and choose when to play him.
Cut to the Chase Prediction:
As for the series prediction, although the Diamondbacks hold the pitching edge in the first two, it’s likely the Dodgers will split considering they are still the top team in baseball and playing at home. Wednesday’s series finale is almost a sure bet for the Dodgers as they are 19-2 in his 21 starts this season. All told, the Dodgers will get some redemption from last week’s sweep, taking two-of-three in this divisional match up.
