Houston Astros versus Seattle Mariners Series 4 th September 2017
The Houston Astros look to increase their lead in the American League West as they take on the Seattle Mariners at The Safe. On paper, it looks like a sweep is in the making for the Astros, but I will examine this more closely to see if Seattle can steal a game.
The pitching match up on Monday features Dallas Keuchel for the Astros versus Marco Gonzales for the Mariners. Keuchel missed much time earlier in the season due to injury, but has an impressive 11-3 record with a 2.97 ERA. Gonzales has struggled, to put it mildly. In six games, he is 0-1 with an ERA of 8.25. In one of the biggest mismatches one can imagine, the Astros will take game one.
On Tuesday, newly acquired Justin Verlander is on the mound for the Astros versus Erasmo Ramirez for the Mariners. Verlander hasn’t been dominating, but is a solid 10-8 with a 3.82 ERA. Ramriez has appeared in 32 games, including 14 starts. He’s an even 5-5 with a 4.43 ERA.
The series finale on Wednesday has Lance McCullers Jr scheduled to face Ariel Miranda. McCullers was dominating early in the season, but not so much lately. Overall he’s 7-3 with a 3.92 ERA. Miranda comes in with a winning record as well, but has a high ERA of 4.85.
Offensively, the Astros are lead by Jose Altuve, who is having a career season hitting .355 with 21 home runs and 29 stolen bases. George Springer heads the power attack with 29 home runs, while Marwin Gonzalez has 21 home runs and a solid .291 batting average. Look for Josh Reddick (.303 average) and Alex Bergman (16 home runs and 15 stolen bases) to also contribute.
For the Mariners, they are lead by the big bat of Nelson Cruz, who has 31 home runs, 103 RBI and a .914 OPS. Also supplying some power are Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager, both with 19 home runs. Add in Jean Segura’s .299 average and 19 stolen bases and the Mariners have a solid overall attack.
Cut to the Chase Prediction
The problem for the Mariners this series is they are outmatched on the mound and facing the top team in the American League. Look for the Astros to sweep the season in these games. The Mariners at home also could steal in win somewhere if things go their way a little, but my best bet would be on the Astros to sweep and further distance themselves from the pack in the AL West.
