Mets at Braves Fantasy Betting Preview June 12, 2018

The New York Mets are in an absolute freefall down the NL East standings after a hot start to the season. The Atlanta Braves have remained a threat at the top of the division, and may now search for further upgrades on the trade market.

Pitching matchup

Jason Vargas (2-4, 7.71 ERA) has been much better during his last two trips to the mound, allowing just two runs on seven hits, two walks and six strikeouts over 10 innings. If the southpaw continues to bounce back, he could be worth picking up at some point this summer.

Mike Foltynewicz (5-4, 2.31 ERA) is the Braves ace that you’ve never heard of before. The righty hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a start since May 4. In six games since then, Foltynewicz has thrown 37 innings, allowed a .169 batting average against and has a 0.97 ERA.

Better play: Foltynewicz

He’s been one of baseball’s best pitchers over the last month and now faces a floundering Mets offense.

Who should start

  • Asdrubel Cabrera is the only Met you can trust right now, and he also happens to have the best career numbers against Foltynewicz (3-for-5, one double, one home run) on the team.
  • Dansby Swanson has started to figure out the big leagues in 2018. He struggles with left-handed pitching, but Vargas rarely goes deep, eliminating the need to exclude Swanson

Who should sit

  • Kurt Suzuki shares catching duties with Tyler Flowers. This will probably be a Suzuki night, but he shouldn’t start for your team. Combined, the pair of backstops are 11-for-50 off of Vargas.
  • Todd Frazier’s return from the DL has not led to an improved offense for the Mets. On top of that, he’s 1-for-8 with four strikeouts against the Braves starter.

Braves too win, It seems like New York can’t buy a win right now. Atlanta has not been as hot as they were at the start of the season, but they have their best pitcher on the mound while the Mets have Vargas.
