Mets versus Braves 15th September 2017
New York Mets versus Atlanta Braves series starting 15th September @ Braves.
The National Leagues East match up features the third place Braves versus the fourth place Mets.
The Mets have underperformed, while the Braves have been hovering around second place much of the season in a weak division.
- On the mound for the Mets on Friday is Rafael Montero versus Sean Newcome for the Braves. Montero is 5-9 with a relatively high 5.05 ERA and has been wild, issuing 57 walks in 101 2/3 innings. Newcome is 2-8 this season and has been even worse finding the strike zone, walking 50 in 84 1/3 innings.
- Saturday’s game should be a clear advantage for the Mets with Jacob deGrom for the Mets against Max Fried for the Braves. Fried with 1-0 with a 4.70 ERA in only 15 1/3 innings, while deGrom is 14-9 with a 3.63 ERA and 221 strikeouts this season.
- The series finale pits Robert Gsellman on the mound for the Mets versus veteran R.A. Dickey for the Braves. Gsellman is 6-7 but have a very high 5.58 ERA, while Dickey is 9-9 with a 4.28 ERA. Dickey can get into trouble with the long ball, allowing 24 home runs in 170 1/3 innings.
The Braves are lead offensively by Freddie Freeman, who is batting a robust .324 with 26 home runs. Veterans Brandon Phillips and Matt Kemp are having solid seasons, while Ender Inciarte adds good speed and batting average with 21 stolen bases and a .309 average.
Michael Conforto is the big power producer for the Mets, having belted 27 home runs. Yoenis Cespedes could be the team’s most consistent hitter, batting .292 with 17 home runs, while catcher WIlmer Flores has 18 home runs and a .271 average.
Cut to the Chase Prediction
I give the series edge to the Braves, being the home team. Look for them to take at least two-of-three this weekend at their home ground.
NB that the statistics are for games through Tuesday, September 12.
