Preview Rangers vs A’s 22nd September 2017

In this American League West match up, the third place the Texas Rangers take on the last place Oakland A’s.

Neither team has a shot at the post season, but the Rangers can reach the .500 mark with a strong finish. The A’s look to build momentum heading into the off season.

This series of games @ Athletics starts on the 22nd September, let’s have a closer look at the games below.

  • In Friday’s opener, the Rangers send Nick Martinez to the mound. He will be opposed by Kendall Graveman for the A’s. Martinez has been hit by the home run ball, giving up 24 home runs in 100 1/3 innings, contributing to a high 5.47 ERA. Graveman is 5-4 for the season with a 4.39 ERA and has 62 strikeouts in 92 1/3 innings.
  • On Saturday, the Rangers go with Miguel Gonzalez and Sean Manaea goes for the A’s. Gonzalez is 1-1 since acquired from the White Sox and is 8-11 with a 4.75 ERA for the season. Manaea is a game over .500 at 11-10 with a 4.56 ERA this season.
  • The finale on Sunday features Martin Perez for the Rangers versus Jharel Cotton for the A’s. Perez is a 12-game winner, but has a relatively high 4.70 ERA and has allowed 210 hits in only 174 1/3 innings. Cotton has surrendered 28 home runs in 124 innings, playing a large part in his high ERA of 5.81.

Offensively, Joey Gallo leads the Rangers in home runs with 38, while Rougned Odor and Mike Napoli add to the power surge, each with 29 home runs. Others to watch that play a key role are Elvis Andrus (20 home runs, 24 stolen bases, .302 average) and Nomar Mazar and Shin-Soo Choo, each with 19 home runs.

For the A’s, Khris Davis has been a force all season, leading the team in home runs with 39 and RBI with 102. Ryan Healy, Matt Joyce and Matt Olson have combined to hit 72 home runs, with Olson blasting 23 in only 176 at-bats.

Cut to the Chase Prediction

The A’s are the home team, which is a deciding factor in them avoiding being swept. Look for the A’s to salvage at least one game from either Friday or Saturday but the Rangers to win this series.
