Preview Rays vs Orioles 22nd September 2017

This American League East match up features the third and fourth place teams in the division.

Neither team has a chance at the post season, but are playing for momentum heading into next season.

These three games we preview below start on the 22nd September @ Orioles.

  • In Friday’s opening game, Alex Cobb is on the mound for the Rays versus Jeremy Hellickson for the Orioles. Cobb is 2-4 over his last six decisions and is 11-10 with a 3.63 ERA for this season. Hellickson is 8-10 with a 5.47 ERA and has been hurt by the long ball, allowing 30 home runs this season.
  • On Saturday, Jack Odorizzi gets the ball for the Rays against Ubaldo Jimenez for the Orioles. Odorizzi is 3-1 over the last four games and is 9-8 with a 4.46 ERA. He has also been victimized by the home run ball, allowing 30 this season. Jimenez has been terrible this season, giving up 31 home runs in 139 2/3 innings, contributing to a 6.57 ERA.
  • The series finale features Chris Archer for the Rays versus Dylan Bundy for the Orioles. Archer has been an excellent strikeout pitcher, fanning 241 in 192 1/3 innings. He’s 9-11 with a 4.02 ERA.

Bundy comes in with a 13-9 record and a 4.24 ERA and has fanned 152 strikeouts in 169 2/3 innings.

Offensively, the Orioles rely on the long ball, with six players having blasted over 20 home runs. Jonathan Schoop leads the team with 32 home runs, 105 RBI and a .298 average. Manny Machado also has 32 home runs, while Adam Jones, Trey Magini, Mark Trumbo and Wellington Castro have added 26, 24, 23 and 20, respectively.

For the Rays, Logan Morrison is the big power threat with 36 home runs and 82 RBI. Steven Souza Jr is batting only .236 but has hit 29 home runs. Corey Dickerson adds to the attack with 26 home runs and a .277 average, while Evan Longoria is having a solid season with 18 home runs and 81 RBI.

Cut to the Chase Prediction

The Rays should have the edge in pitching, while the Orioles hold the advantage at the plate. Look for the Orioles to take two of three and maintain their lead over the Rays in the division.
