Preview Yankees vs Blue Jays September 22nd 2017

In this American League East showdown, the second place Yankees take on the last place Blue Jays.

The Yankees look for secure a playoff position and an outside shot at the division title, while the Blue Jays try to play spoiler.

This series of games starts on the 22nd September @ Blue Jays.

  • Friday’s game features Luis Severino for the Yankees against Marco Estrada for the Blue Jays. Severino comes in with a record of 13-6, a 2.93 ERA and 218 strikeouts. He’s won seven and lost only two over his last ten starts. Estrada, on the other hand, is 9-8 with a mediocre 4.84 ERA. He’s allowed a whopping 29 home runs in 176 2/3 innings, but is 4-0 over his last four decisions.
  • On Saturday, Jordan Montgomery takes the ball for the Yankees. He is opposed by Joe Biagini for the Blue Jays. Montgomey is 1-2 over the last eight games and is 8-7 with a 4.06 ERA for the season. Biagini has struggled all season, coming in 0-3 over his last eight starts and 3-11 with a 5.22 ERA overall.
  • The series Sunday finale features Sonny Gray for the Yankees versus Marcus Stroman for the Blue Jays. Gray is 9-11 with a 3.38 ERA and has allowed only 129 hits in 151 2/3 innings. Stroman has been the Blue Jays best strater, coming in at 12-8 with a 3.07 ERA.

Offensively, both teams rely on the long ball. The Yankees are led by Aaron Judge, who has belted 44 home runs and knocked in 99. Gary Sanchez completes an excellent power combo with 31 home runs and 86 RBI. Didi Gregorius and veteran Brett Gardner add to the attack with 24 and 20 home runs, respectively.

For the Blue Jays, Justin Smoak heads the onslaught with 38 home runs and 83 RBI. Josh Donaldson has 30 home runs, while Kendrys Morales has had 27 to go along with 80 RBI. Veteran Jose Bautista is batting only .205, but has contributed with 22 home runs.

Cut to the Chase Prediction

The Yankees will move closer to securing their wild card chances and perhaps move closer to the Red Sox, winning at least two or possibly three games this weekend against the Blue Jays.
