  • On Friday, James Paxton goes for the Mariners and he will be opposed by Charlie Morton for the Astros. Paxton is the ace of the staff, but has been out since August 10. He’s 12-3 with a 2.98 ERA this season. Morton has been solid all season, coming in at 11-7 with a 3.86 ERA. He’s struck out 147 in only 128 1/3 innings.
  • Saturday’s games features Erasmo Ramirez for the Mariners versus Dallas Keuchel for the Astros. Ramirez is 1-2 since joining the Mariners and is 5-5 with a 4.25 ERA this season. Keuchel has allowed only 102 in 127 2/3 innings, contributing to a 12-4 record and 3.03 ERA.
  • In the series finale, Ariel Miranda takes the ball for the Mariners, while Justin Verlander is on the hill for the Astros. Miranda is 8-7 with a 4.90 ERA and has been hurt by the long ball, allowing 35 home runs this season. Verlander is 3-0 in his last three starts and is 12-8 with a 3.58 ERA for the season.

Offensively, the Astros are lead by MVP candidate Jose Altuve, hitting a robust .349 with 23 home runs and 31 stolen bases. George Spring leads the power attack with 31 home runs, while Marwin Gonzalez has added 21 home runs and a .292 average. Watch for Josh Reddick, who has been consistent with a .312 average and 79 RBI.

The Mariners get big power production from Nelson Cruz with his 32 home runs and 107 RBI. Robinson Cano, Kyle Seager and Mike Zunino add to the mix, each with over 20 home runs. Jean Segura has also been very consistent, batting .295 for the season.

Cut to the Chase Prediction

It’s tough to envision the Mariners having much success at Houston this weekend. A sweep possible for the Astros, but the Mariners are likely to squeak out a win to avoid the sweep.
