In arguably the best match series for this weekend, the National League Central leading Cubs take on the second place Cardinals. The Cubs feature a more high powered offense with six players with 20 or more home runs.
The edge for the Cardinals is in the pitching. At home, the Cubs are 41-32 this season while the Cardinals are 35-37 on the road.
- Friday’s match up features Carlos Martinez for the Cardinals versus John Lackey for the Cubs. Martinez is 11-10 with a 3.33 ERA and has 200 strikeouts in 189 innings. Lackey also has 11 wins, against 11 losses with a 4.85 ERA. What has hurt him the most is the long ball, allowing a staggering 33 home runs in 155 innings.
- On Saturday, Michael Wacha is on the hill for the Cardinals, while Kyle Hendricks take the ball for the Cubs. Wacha is 12-7 with a 3.99 ERA and 3-0 over his last three. Hendricks missed time due to injury, but has a very solid 3.35 ERA and has allowed only 108 hits in 121 innings.
- Sunday’s game favorite the Cardinals, with Lance Lynn on the mound versus Jose Quintana. Lynn has a very good 3.07 ERA and has allowed a mere 137 hits in 176 2/3 innings. Quintana is a strikeout pitcher, fanning 184 in 169 1/3 innings and is 10-11 with a 4.25 ERA.
At the plate, the Cubs are lead by Anthony Rizzo with 31 home runs and 102 RBI. Kris Bryant leads the team in hitting and has belted 26 home runs. Also providing significant power are Kyle Schwarber, Wilson Contreras and Javier Baez, who have hit 26, 21 and 21 home runs, respectively.
The Cardinals most consistent hitter has been Tommy Pham, batting .305 with 19 home runs and 19 stolen bases. Paul DeJong and Randal Gruchuk lead the team in home runs with 22 and 20. Also worth watching this series is Judd Gyorko with 18 home runs and catcher Yadier Molina, who is batting .282 with 17 home runs.

If the Cardinals pitching can keep the high powered Cubs in the ball park, they have an excellent chance of winning the series. Look for the Cardinals to upset the Cubs and take two-of-three on the road.
